Copy after Jheronimus Bosch,

Adoration of the Magi, c. 1560.

Oak panel, 127.8 x 72.5 cm,

’s-Hertogenbosch, Het Noordbrabants Museum, 16113.

Out of the many variants, versions and copies that were made after the central panel of the Prado Epiphany, this painting is the only one that was clearly made to replicate the original.

All dimensions, the panel’s format and all compositional elements were carefully copied.

The extensive and detailed underdrawing was carried out in a dry medium and left nothing to the imagination of the painter, who just had to carry out the design in colour.

The quality of the blue pigment that was used for the Madonna's mantle was not very high, as her robe turned into an unattractive brown over time.

Although a faithful copy, it was not created to pass as a Bosch, nor was it important to somehow show who the author of the original was, since the signature in the lower left corner of the original was not copied.
